For Ione's Annual Dream Festival, SleepWalks has a residency from January 14th through January 20th. We propose flipping the tables for two nights on January 16th and January 18th. On these nights, we will listen to one of our recorded performances while we sleep. After each evening, we will journal and document our dreams, and compare them with the dreams recorded by participants of the SleepWalks event from which the sounds are taken. We will also make these recordings available to participants of the Dream Festival so we can all share the experiences and our dream journals together on the Dream Festival Facebook page. Our goal with this online manifestation of SleepWalks is to continue our research into how sound elicits dream, and to look for similarities in the dreams of participants that might be related to the sounds we are all hearing as we sleep.
SleepWalks perform soundscapes for an audience sleeping overnight, leading soundwalks through dreams. We use field recordings collected around the world. The performances last twelve-hours, gently fading out in the morning as participants journal and share their dreams. The goal of this long-term project is to study the relationship between sound and dream in order to learn to compose collective soundwalks for dreamers. During SleepWalks we record the sound samples that we use, and later, by reading the timestamp, we mark possible correlations between the sounds in the improvisation and writings from the participants' dream journals.
